The Cover Letter

A cover letter should accompany every resume you provide to a prospective employer. A well-written cover letter can make the difference between a quick glance during the employer's screening and more serious consideration.

Keep the letter concise and simple.

  • Tell them why your resume is the one they have been waiting for!

Use no more than three paragraphs.

  • The first paragraph should be an introduction. If you are responding to an advertisement or job posting online, reference the date of the advertisement or posting, the publication or website where you found the job, and the title of the position.
  • The second paragraph is where you give a synopsis of your background, strengths, and experience. Try to relate them to the position you are applying for and the specific job description you saw advertised. Also, explain what interest or experience you have in their type of business.
  • The third paragraph is the final one. Thank the employer for his/her consideration and express your strong desire to meet with them in person to discuss the position further.
