The first quarter of 2017 is nearly behind us and it’s been an interesting start to the year. There are many factors contributing to these interesting times including the political environment with a new president and leadership changes in the House and Senate and locally the race for Omaha mayor. The stock market reached record highs, which is often encouraging though it leads to speculation that interest rates may be going up. The housing market is strong in Omaha and unemployment remains low across the state. What does all this mean for you and me?
The good news is that true-to-form, the Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri regional markets are very stable. I interview people from all over the United States, and many parts of our wonderful country have been hit hard for full-time employment opportunities in the past few years. Professionals in IT have stayed employed and engaged by doing consulting projects and keeping as busy as they want to be. Many choose IT consulting as their profession of choice. Projections for employment in our markets still show continued, stable growth.
More good news is that because of the well-known market stability here in the “bread basket”, people who have moved away are interested in coming back “home”. Every day we talk to potential candidates who are tired of the grind in the big city, the long commutes, and the lack of work/life balance. Having a great reputation for a wonderful place to live, raise your family, and have access to great career opportunities is invaluable.
And the final good news is that our Midwest work ethic and core values are well-known by corporations in the United States and that attracts businesses to come here to stay and to offer additional opportunities for all of us. Stay positive, continue to work hard, and take advantage of all that our market has to provide. It’s nothing but good news!
