A year ago I was sitting in a similar situation as a good portion of the current class of college graduates – unemployed.
Looking for a new job can be overwhelming. There are so many factors that need to be considered before throwing your resume in front of any company that has an open position. Looking back at my job seeking efforts from a year ago there are a few things that I wish I would have done differently. Whether you are a recent college graduate or you are looking for a new opportunity, here are a few tips that I have learned from working in the staffing industry
Your resume is your first impression
You are probably thinking, “Thanks, captain obvious,” but there are people out there that do not realize the importance of a resume. Your resume is everything when you are looking for a new job. This is the first time that employers/recruiters will get to see who you are and what type of position you are looking for. Make sure your resume has all of the details about your most recent position or experiences. You don’t have to try to make everything that you have done fit on one page, which leads me to my next point.
Your resume can be longer than one page
*Gasp* What? Yes, I said it. Resumes can absolutely be longer than one page. Employers want to see what you were responsible for and what you have accomplished from your most recent position, not just the title. Titles can vary from company to company. In order to see if you are going to be a fit for a job, employers need to see specific job duties and responsibilities of that position. For example, if you are looking for an IT position you would want to add all of the technologies you have worked with and how you used them. The same goes for any other type of job you are trying to get hired for. This doesn’t mean your resume should go on and on for 10 pages, but if you feel like it needs to be longer than one or two pages, do not feel afraid to do so.
Keep your LinkedIn profile updated
Social media is huge in today’s market, and LinkedIn is an easy way for employers to get a quick professional snapshot of potential employees. Although there are many users on LinkedIn, (about two new users a second) not all of them are necessarily active. One way for you to stand out from others searching for a position is to update your profile. Add a picture, summary, skills, and previous work history to give future employers a chance to know you before they even pick up the phone. If your resume spiked some interest with a company, the next place they will look (most likely) is your online profile. Make sure you are ready.
Call a recruiter
The number one thing that I wish I would have done while searching for a job was to work with a recruiter. I always thought it would cost money to reach out to a recruiter, but I was wrong. Now being on the other side of the staffing industry, I see how much time I wasted by not reaching out and asking for help. Recruiters know the job market, they have relationships with hiring managers, and they have access to jobs that are not always posted on the job sites. Whether you are a recent college grad or you are searching for your dream job, a recruiter will be able to point you in the right direction.
