Understanding the Four Attributes of Emotional Intelligence – Part 3: Social Awareness

In part 3 of this 4 part series we will focus on social awareness and its role in emotional intelligence.

As you may recall, emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to recognize not only your emotions but the emotions of those around you while being able to adjust your emotions and influence those of others.

Emotional intelligence is comprised of four attributes:

    • Self-Awareness: recognizing your strengths and what is left to learn
    • Self-Management: the ability to manage impulses and quick responses
    • Social Awareness
    • Relationship Management

As defined by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves in Emotional Intelligence 2.0, social awareness is the ability to “recognize and understand the moods of other individuals and entire groups of people”. It’s the ability to observe body language, facial expressions, and even posture in an effort to respond appropriately.

As discussed by Mike Crompton in his article Increase Your Emotional Intelligence by Improving Your Social Awareness, social awareness is comprised of three components:

  • Empathy – the ability to understand the emotions and viewpoints of others
  • Service ethic – the ability to understand and meet the needs of customers
  • Organizational awareness – the ability to understand the dynamics and politics of an organization

So how can you improve your social awareness? Bradberry and Greaves discuss many ways in which to do so. A few of them include:

  • Greet people by name
  • Watch body language
  • Live in the moment
  • Practice the art of listening
  • Go people watching
  • Understand the rules of the culture game

Having an awareness of social situations is the ability to recognize the needs of others while being able to respond appropriately in order to meet those needs.

Join us for the last installment of this blog series where we will focus on the fourth attribute of EQ, relationship management.
