First and foremost I am not trying to start a debate with my fellow Nebraskans. You hear recruiters talk all the time about the importance of the right hire as it can cost businesses huge amounts of time, money, and energy. Is Nebraska football a business? In this state it most certainly is. So let’s take a look at the importance of the hiring process by using the Cornhuskers as the example. Going forward I will identify them as the “business”.
1) Identify the need. Did the business need to fire Frank Solich? That is irrelevant. The business decided to move in a different direction but the backfill of the position was the most critical to the customers of the business – the population of Nebraska. The business needs a new CEO. Now that the need is identified we can begin the process.
2) Exploratory process to identify candidates. This is arguably the most important part of the process. If you don’t have the right ingredients for a recipe the meal will never turn out well. There are a lot of steps here. Due diligence and vetting is a must. Does the candidate have a proven track record? Callahan, Pelini, Riley? No, none of them did. Does the candidate have experience in the role that you are hiring them for? Sometimes businesses want to take a shot at the next up and comer but it is a gamble. In Pelini’s case it was a gamble that didn’t pay off. In my opinion, the candidate being a cultural fit for the business is equally as important as is their skill fit. Were Bill Callahan and Bo Pelini a culture fit for the business? No, not even close.
3) Hire and place the candidate. Before you take this step check references and perform a background check. Did the business do that in the case of Callahan, Pelini, and Riley? Who knows but it sure seems like the processes they have in place are not up to par.
The business of Nebraska football has hired three failed CEOs in a period of fourteen years. Can and will it survive a fourth? It has to get it right this time.
