No More Sun?

With the winter months ahead of us and the end of daylight savings time, many of us have a hard time adjusting. Less daylight can cause people to become lethargic, depressed, and tired. But there are things to do to keep you feeling happy and energized.

Go to bed at the same time every night and get enough sleep. Use the change in time to rise an hour earlier and create a new habit. With the time change, the sun rises earlier and by getting up earlier you will expose yourself to more sunlight. Research shows that the more light you receive in the morning, either naturally or artificially, the more energy you will have.

Exercise produces natural endorphins that can boost your mood. If you can get outside, in the morning or during the day, not only do you get a bump from the exercise but you also get more sun exposure. If you can work out in the morning, it gives you more energy and you start the day off on a positive note.

Fresh air and sunlight can boost your mood. Even when it is cold outside bundle up and get outdoors. During your lunch go for a walk or go for a longer hike on the weekends. Even though the sun doesn’t rise high enough in the northern part of the United States for you to get the proper about of Vitamin D, the sun can still help energize you. Makes sure you eat foods rich in Vitamin D (oily fish, eggs, mushrooms, and milk) as well.

With more time spent indoors, make good use of your evenings. Plan family game nights, watch a movie, or plan a special dinner. It is easy to become a little lazy during cold dark evenings, but use these times to make some new memories. During the summer it is easy to be too busy to enjoy time together so take advantage of this new opportunity.

Plan a vacation. For me, I know having something to look forward to makes a big difference. It can be a getaway to a warm sunny location on a beach or a weekend ski trip. Whatever type of vacation you decide on, planning something gives you motivation and energizes you.

Soon enough spring will be here and long summer nights will return, but for now enjoy the time to get cozy and enjoy the season.
