As we kick off the New Year, I’ve been reflecting on the last couple decades. I have experienced two recessions in the last 23 years in the dynamic search and staffing industry. Although Aureus Group had a growth year in 2017, it has not been easy. The reality is that the business world is noisy. There are many factors that have changed our once predictable industry and a few things that have stayed the same. As you know, there are many more niche firms in the consulting and staffing space, the unemployment rate and underemployed in the Midwest, and varying levels of global, political, and continued technological disruptions continue to shake up our plans and workflow. It’s noisy…shockingly many industry leaders and economists have polarizing advice and predictions. Who will you listen to in 2018?
One of the luxuries of my job is having the opportunity to talk with so many amazing leaders in a variety of business sectors. Over the last few months I’ve tried to shut out the instant information noise from all the social media platforms and simply ask smart people a lot of questions. I listened in the hopes of finding a crystal ball. Here’s what I actually learned. From healthcare, manufacturing, and insurance to business and financial services we are all concerned and focused on providing stable leadership with clear concise messaging to their teams and customers. Leaders balance countless responsibilities and miss simple things that make a big difference if handled in the right way. Many extraordinary leaders told me when they started to truly listen more to their people, act on their suggestions, reward them for challenging the status quo, and even embrace those who (respectfully) challenged their decisions, they felt like they started leading at a new level by positively impacting individual performance as well as the business objectives of their organizations. After all, talent drives strategy.
The message is loud and clear. Who will you listen to in 2018? I am committed to listen to our top talent; in-house employees, contract employees, and placed candidates. The solutions, competitive advantages, and development we can all experience by listening, acting, developing, and sharing clear concise communication are waiting for us. The firm with the best talent wins! I can say without hesitation that no matter how noisy it has become, Aureus Group has stayed focused on listening to our customers, learning new tools, educating ourselves on industry trends, honing our communication skills, and building on new and existing relationships in the efforts to stay a step ahead of our customers’ talent needs. It’s honestly humbling to work with the talent and tenure around me. I promise to listen more!
Thank you to all those who have willingly share their lessons learned and insight to help me grow in my leadership journey and ultimately elevate our recruitment practice. If you have additional feedback, please share and we will listen!
