I’ve been in the staffing industry for four years now, and in those four years I’ve talked with a LOT of individuals. Some of them I’m talking with for the first time and others I’ve been talking with for years. For the most part, people who I call are pretty receptive to my calls, but then there are times when the person on the other line isn’t so receptive to a conversation.
I understand there is a good chance that we are calling you at work and it’s hard to talk with a recruiter when your boss and co-workers are sitting within feet of you. If that’s the case, however, simply let us know that it isn’t a good time and we will respect that. We also understand that you’re probably not ACTIVELY looking for a new job, but the most successful individuals are those who are constantly open to hearing about how they can better their situations. That is what a recruiter is trying to do – help you better your situation.
With that being said, here are a few reasons why you should spend a few minutes talking with a recruiter when they reach out:
Job with a substantial pay raise
You may LOVE your job and think that nothing would ever make you leave, but I’ve learned that most, if not all, people have a “number”. If I called you today and guaranteed you a job that would pay you $20K more a year, would you turn down the opportunity to look at that? Probably not. However, if you immediately disconnect or brush off a recruiter, you’ll never know!
Our business is all about long-term relationships. Back in college, my friend group used to frequent one particular restaurant to visit one of the servers who typically waited on us. Because of the relationship I built with her, she ended up helping me get a job at the restaurant, which led to me meeting my husband. Now, I’m not saying I’m going to help you meet your future significant other (but you never know, right?), however, by building a long-term relationship with a recruiter, similar to one you may have with your favorite server or bartender, we are constantly keeping you front of mind when we have positions that could be your dream role. Plus, in an ever-changing world, you never know when you may NEED our help to find a new position. By having the relationship already in place, it can better help us help you when it comes time to look for something new.

In today’s world, there are a lot of spam callers (I think I get more every week!) so it can be frustrating to get unsolicited calls from anyone, but remember we aren’t asking for your money. We are simply asking if we can help you out! If we can’t or it’s not a great time, we respect that and will invite a call when the time is right. So, the next time you receive a call from a recruiter about a position, hear them out because you never know how it might change your life!
