Are you an Effective Communicator?

We continue to hear from clients and candidates what motivates and frustrates them in the workplace. Not surprisingly, increased communication is the common denominator on everyone’s’ wish list. It’s evident that today’s business climate requires collaboration vertically and horizontally. It’s not enough to just work hard. It’s not enough to do a great job. To be successful, you need to learn how to really communicate with others.

Everyone Communicates, Few Connect by John MaxwellHave you ever gotten frustrated because you weren’t able to communicate your ideas as effectively as you wanted and people just weren’t getting it? Maybe you’ve walked away from a discussion with a different perspective than your co-worker, boss, or employee? Or worse, have you ever written or received an email that was taken way out of context?

Don’t worry. You’re not the only one. I answered yes to all three questions!

Connecting is the ability to identify with people and relate to them in such a way that it increases our ability to influence them. This is a skill that can be continually developed. Recognizing the importance of doing this, Aureus Group’s management team recently read Everyone Communicates, Few Connect: What the Most Effective People Do Differently by leadership and communication expert John Maxwell. The goal was to help us develop a communication advantage by learning to connect with every kind of person in any kind of situation.

If you are facing communication or connecting challenges, as many of us do, you can overcome them with a little practice. Interaction with others could possibly be the most demanded skill in our marketplace. Everything we become, and all that we accomplish in life, happens as a result of our relationships. If you also believe that the ability to connect with others is one of the most important skills a person can learn, read Everyone Communicates, Few Connect right away.
