It is Nice to be Wanted

The U.S. market for IT staffing is expected to grow at a rate of 6 percent in 2016, maintaining the rate of growth exhibited in 2014 and 2015. This would make 2016 the seventh consecutive year of growth for the IT segment and represent a new all-time high. The long-term demand driver of broadening and deepening reliance on technology remains in place propelling overall IT employment, while the trends of cloud computing, big data, mobile, digital transformation, and IT security are dictating the near-term demand for specific skills.

The supply of IT workers remains relatively tight, which is typically beneficial for staffing demand, though poses recruiting challenges. The national unemployment rate for the computer and mathematical occupation category is hovering around 2.4 percent, and the rate is below 2 percent for computer for many roles and technology skills. The annual H-1B visa cap of 85,000 has not helped alleviate supply constraints, with 233,000 petitions filed for fiscal year 2016 in just one week. On the other hand, an increase of students electing to major in computer science is helping to provide some much-needed supply, though with less experience.

Between 2000 and 2014, IT employment has increased more than 30 percent, compared to just 5.3 percent for total employment. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that IT employment will continue to outperform through 2022, growing 18 percent versus 10.8 percent for total employment.

So IT professionals enjoy what you do and continue to grow. As the old saying goes “It is nice to be wanted!”
