Make 2017 Your Best Year Yet!

The New Year is just around the corner! What are you going to accomplish in the next twelve months?

If you haven’t already taken the time to reflect on the year that you’ve had, it’s a great time to start. At Aureus Group we have been spending the last few weeks reviewing our accomplishments (as a team and as individuals) and what those accomplishments have meant to our organization.

Not so fun fact: Did you know that about half of the country makes New Year’s resolutions, but only eight percent actually follow through and accomplish them?  With that statistic in mind, I thought I would offer up some friendly tips for setting great goals and how to ensure you accomplish them.

Ask Yourself Some Questions

Start with questions that will help you reflect on the year that you had and what you want to accomplish in the upcoming year.

  • What did you accomplish so far in 2016 that you are proud of? What are you disappointed about?
  • What do you want to accomplish in 2017? For example: Do you want to earn a promotion? Do you know what you need to do to earn it?
  • Are you prepared to make the changes necessary to reach your new goals? (You can’t keep doing the same things and expect different results).
  • Who can help me accomplish my goals?

Identify Obstacles

What could prevent you from reaching your goals? Do you have a plan to overcome them?

Here is a great article that covers some common obstacles that keep you from reaching your goals.

Write Your Goals Down

I was reading an article last week about a study of Harvard MBA students and goal setting. Here is an excerpt that I found interesting:

Harvard’s graduate students were asked if they have set clear, written goals for their futures, as well as if they have made specific plans to transform their fantasies into realities. The result of the study was only three percent of the students had written goals and plans to accomplish them, 13 percent had goals in their minds but haven’t written them anywhere, and 84 percent had no goals at all.

Think for a moment which group you belong to. After 10 years, the same group of students were interviewed again and the conclusion of the study was totally astonishing. The 13 percent of the class who had goals, but did not write them down, earned twice the amount of the 84 percent who had no goals. The three percent who had written goals were earning on average 10 times as much as the other 97 percent of the class combined.

Recover and Celebrate

No one is perfect and change is hard. Focus on the little things you can do daily that will set you up for success. Get back up and dust yourself off when you fall down. And celebrate the little wins along the way!

Happy New Year! Here’s to a successful 2017 for you all!
