We recently celebrated the 4th of July, and with that comes one of my favorite things, FIREWORKS… unless they are being blown up in my neighborhood until 1:00 am (but that is another story). Anyway, this got me thinking about how I used to hate them as a child because I was scared of them, and I started to wonder how I ever got over that fear. My thought train then kept me on a loop of my other fears, both ones that have passed and ones that are still very present, and how I can overcome those (other than spiders, I will never overcome that fear).
Working in the staffing industry, I get to talk with individuals daily about their hopes, dreams, and also their fears. In fact, I was recently talking with a candidate of mine who had a job offer from another organization. When I asked her how she was feeling about it, her response was “scared”. She said that it was frightening to put in her notice and that she was scared of letting her managers and co-workers down by leaving.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that “fear” alone is probably a huge factor as to why some employees stay in their positions longer than they should and why others, when faced with a job offer, turn it down or “ghost” the prospective employer.
So, how can you lessen the fear that goes along with turning in your notice?
For starters, simply make sure that you are leaving your current employer on the best terms possible. One way to do this is to make sure that you give notice (two weeks is standard, but some companies do require longer notices) even if you think the company may not make you work those two weeks. Let your prospective employer know that you plan on giving notice, and that if you find yourself available sooner, you will let them know. Don’t let them pressure you into not giving notice. Another way to leave on a good note is to thank your employer for their investment in you. Even if you hated everything about your job, you still learned something and probably were able to take away new skills. Be honest, but don’t speak poorly. If you’re leaving because you didn’t have any opportunity to move up within the company, let them know! That is something that many people can empathize with and understand.
Another way to lessen the fear is to simply remember the reasons that made you look in the first place and get excited about those things being offered in your new role! Excitement can easily replace fear when you start thinking about the flexibility your next job might offer, the future growth potential, or even more money!
Brian Tracy, the author of several books about achieving success and becoming a millionaire (nice right?!) once said, “Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.” Leaving a position is awkward and uncomfortable, but the amazing things that can happen when you try something new are more than enough to make up for that.
