It’s hard to believe another year is coming to a close so quickly. The Royals are the World Series Champions, Marty McFly arrived from 1985 a couple months ago, and we have “hover boards” all over the place! Some might say this has been yet another year of successes in many areas, while others might say we have a long way to go. Personally, I have a long way to go and I bet you might be saying the same thing. How can you become your own personal champion and set your future up for success? Well, my friends, it’s actually quite easy. Set yourself some goals!
At Aureus Group, one of the tools we use to help us in goal setting is Stephen Covey’s Four Quadrants for time management. As you’ll see below, this tool asks you to write down daily activities that are:
• Important and urgent
• Important and not urgent
• Not important and urgent
• Not important and not urgent
By utilizing this tool, you can determine the activities where you need to spend the majority of your time. Those are the areas to base your goals on.
Personally, I also like to utilize a tactical mapping worksheet once I determine my long-term goals (see below). Put each of your yearly goals in the key results area and to the left, break down the steps you’ll take daily, weekly, or monthly to get there. What obstacles will you encounter along the way and how will you overcome those obstacles? You know they’re going to happen so write them down and think about your plan for how to overcome them. Experts always say that people who write down their goals are more likely to accomplish them!
Once you have completed your goals and your strategy on how you will accomplish them, share them! The more people you share them with, the more people to help hold you accountable! We all LOVE being held accountable, right? 🙂 Yeah, I know, you’re like me, and you don’t need anyone reminding you of what you should be doing, however, that boost from those close to you (family, friends, Facebook friends) can be the extra boost you need to get to the goal you’ve been striving for!
In conclusion, it turns out you don’t need enormous amounts of plutonium to propel yourself into the future. Nor do you need a Salvador Perez or Alex Gordon to be your own world champion. All you need are goals and a plan for how you’ll accomplish them. Wishing you a prosperous 2016!
