Aligning skills with workforce needs spawns new development approaches

Midlands Business Journal – August 19, 2016

Demand for talent is driving new programs and public-private partnerships to help employees remain employable and meet the changing workforce needs. As it relates to “career transitions”, Aureus Group Managing Director Chris Carlson-Dennell noted succession planning, interim consulting roles and ownership transitions come to mind. “The demographics indicate this will continue to be an opportunity for many executives,” she said. “We are seeing a lot of second or third career transitions. Many people are spending time to self-assess what they are good at and how they want to use their skills in a different way.” More “dramatic” career changes usually require lower compensation and more employer flexibility/training when someone moves industry and/or job function, she said. Carlson-Dennell suggests anyone looking to pick up additional skills “get out there.” “It’s important to network and build your brand and skill set outside of your current employer,” she said. “Connecting with a search firm specializing in your niche and level can also be invaluable. We have market intelligence about employer brands, networking opportunities and relevant training sessions.”
